Growing up, we all have one idea of what it means to be a mother. The majority of us idealize our mothers and look up to them when we are sick or just need a shoulder to cry on. At times, we might dislike our mothers or get easily frustrated when they won't give in to our wants. However, we usually all agree that no matter what, we would not trade our mothers for any other mother.
My mother is one of those mothers. My mother would take care of me when I was sick and comfort me when I was sad. When I was nine years old my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. The cancer was stage one but at the time, treatment involved surgery followed by chemo therapy. I remember one day, coming home from school and finding out that my mom had had surgery that day. This was a complete shock to me. No one told me that she was going to be having surgery that day and I couldn't understand for the life of me why I wasn't able to be at the hospital that day.
Now that I am a mother, I understand why my mom decided to not tell me she was having surgery that day.
Lesson Learned: While its important for your children to be aware of the things that affect your life and theirs, you have to remember they are children. Children should not have to suffer with our burdens. As mothers, we have to shelter our children from some of our difficulties in life.
